At some point or other you may find that your hard drive is getting quite full, and will need to free up space. The good news is that isn’t as difficult as you might think, and on Windows PCs there are actually several easy ways that you can free up quite a bit of space.
In fact if you’d like to free up a significant amount of space right now, there are a few simple tips that you can use:
Run the Disk Cleanup tool
The Disk Cleanup tool is a built-in app in Windows that is designed specifically to find and delete temporary files that aren’t needed. It will scan your hard drive and locate any temporary internet files, cache files, logs, driver packages, and various other types of files.
The exact amount of space you will free up with this tool can vary, but it is a good place to start nonetheless.
Empty the Recycle Bin
People often forget that when they delete files on Windows they aren’t removed completely, and are stored in the Recycle Bin instead. Over time the amount of files that are stored there can start to pile up – which is why you should empty it out to quickly gain a decent amount of space.
Compress video files
One of the types of files that probably takes up the most space on your hard drives will undoubtedly be videos. However even if you don’t want to get rid of the video files that you’ve stored, you can compress them so that they take up less space.
An easy way to do that is to use Online Video Converter to convert your videos to formats with better compression. Learning how to convert M4V to MP4 or any other formats will be very convenient with it, as it is entirely web-based and you won’t need to install any software.
Uninstall apps or games that aren’t needed
It is safe to say that you have some apps or games installed that you never actually use – and you should remove them if that is the case. That can be done from your Control Panel, and you should be able to even sort out the apps that are installed based on when they were last used, or by their total size.
Between these four tips you should be able to free up a lot of space on your hard drive. If you want you can dig deeper however, and analyze your hard drive using various tools to find out what is taking up so much space – and decide what to do about it.
Try to make it a point to not let unnecessary files accumulate in the future. If need be you may want to look into external or cloud storage options that you can use to store some of your files so that you don’t need to keep everything on the main hard drive of your Windows PC.
