Five Factors Behind A Successful Blog

Creating a blog is a complicated and not always straightforward process. There’s a lot of conflicting advice out there and it’s hard to know what the best strategies are to achieve the most success.

That said it’s also certainly true that some decisions are better than others when it comes to blog design and there are certainly some things you should and shouldn’t do. It might not really be logical to say that there’s such thing as the ‘perfect blog’, but for the sake of an interesting article, here we are going to imagine what one might look like. If you did everything right, and if you listened to all the best advice, what would your perfect blog look like? Here we will imagine a universe where such a thing might exist.

A Great Niche

First of all the perfect blog would have to be on a fantastic niche. This would mean ensuring that there wasn’t too much competition on the subject, but that at the same time there was enough people who were interested in the topic and enough infrastructure around it to help you with the subject. The best way to accomplish this is probably to choose a popular subject and then to give it your own unique spin so that you can stand out from the crowd.

A Brilliant Design

The look and design of your blog also needs to be something you give a lot of thought. The perfect blog would have a design that made it stand out from the crowd and that was nicely unique – but it would also be a design that didn’t alienate anyone and that everyone would appreciate (here’s your first sign that such a perfect blog isn’t possible – you can’t please everyone all of the time).

Meanwhile you should also ensure that your design is one that works on every single device. The perfect blog would look exactly the same whether you were looking at it on a 3DS or on a huge HD TV.

Gripping, Well-Written and Consistent Content

The content on the perfect blog would be written consistently – i.e. you’d upload at least three posts a day (one is good, but three is perfect). Meanwhile the content would be on interesting subjects that were unique and that appealed to a wide audience and they would be thought provoking and stimulating without permanently offending anyone.

Great Monetization

The perfect blog would not have any Google AdSense in sight. If you’re using AdSense or any ad network then you’re giving away your traffic which means you aren’t making the most from your site. The perfect blog would exist to promote a great product that people wanted to see and it wouldn’t do this in a way that was too in your face either.

Unique Images

The images on the perfect blog would be unique to that site and not just harvested from Google Images. They would look professional, they would be well edited and they would elevate the level of the site as a result.

The best thing about the internet-age is the amount of possibilities, which are, literally, within reach. The problem is sorting through them all for the ones that really speak to you.

To make things easier, we’ve collated a list of our favourite apps. Have a look and you might find something you didn’t even know you were looking for.

Plants vs. Zombies

Sometimes, you just want to turn that commute into a fun activity and nothing says fun like zombies tearing up your garden. Like all the best games, it’s simply to play – the zombies advance, you repel tem with melons and sweetcorn – and a more than a little bizarre – the zombies advance, you repel tem with melons and sweetcorn.

OpenTable

Perhaps a more adult app, OpenTable allows you to place last-minute reservations for dinner on the move. 15,000 restaurants in the UK, US and Canada participate in the scheme and you can search for the right one by type of food, price-range, time required and customer ratings. The app will also let you know which restaurants have free tables close to your location.

Epicurious

We don’t get the name, but Epicurious is perfect when you stop off at the supermarket on your way home. All you have to do is enter the ingredients you have in your kitchen and then the app will suggest recipes you can make (and the extra ingredients you’ll need). There’s no need to gamble on the recipes either, as they all have a percentage of people who’ve already made and liked it.

Pictureka

If you want distraction, but don’t fancy the usual ‘hit this with this’ format, then Pictureka might be the app for you. The app presents you with a cluttered screen of different objects and then challenges you to find a group of particular items (items of fruit or space equipment, for example). It’s incredibly addictive, similar to Where’s Wally, but far more portable.

Lose It!

Phones can tend to be a constant reminder that work always needs done, but it can also be a motivator for good. Lose It! Is a calorie-tracking app that takes your current stats and gives you a daily calorie allowance to reach your intended weight. Simple, but highly effective.

ColorSplash

Despite its unfortunate American misspelling, ColorSplash is a great and easy to use app for giving your phone’s photos an extra dimension. This app allows you to change any photo – and section of a photo – from colour into black and white. It has to be seen to be truly appreciated.

WordPress is making its way into being the most popular blog platform used today. Its simple design with easy to use features makes it a great platform for newbie and advanced bloggers alike.
Depending on the type of WordPress platform you use (the free vs. the paid for), you can do so many cool functions with your account. The following five items are WordPress tricks that you need to learn.

1. Insert featured images.

Every blog should have one main image that goes along with the topic. Instead of randomly shoving this picture somewhere in the post, you can use it as featured image and every featured image will appear in the same place throughout each respective blog post. For example, if you have your blog set up so that featured images are placed in the top left corner of the post, each featured image will appear in the same place, allowing your blog posts to have a more consistent look and feel.
To do this, simply use the Featured Image tab found on the bottom right-hand side of your blog post. Drag and drop an image, rename and resize it if necessary, save it as a featured image, and you’ll be good to go.

2. Add authors.

If more than one person writes posts for your blog, it is nice to show who wrote them by adding their names as the author. Before you can assign someone as the post’s author, you need to create a User by using the User tab on the left-hand navigation. Once there, fill out the appropriate information, and when finished, click save. Once a User has been created, their name will appear in the author drop down box found at the bottom of every post. Once an author’s name is selected, it will appear on the published post.

3. Set posts to publish automatically.

WordPress users don’t have to manually upload their posts anymore. Instead, once your post is written, images are set, and it is ready to be published, you can use the date feature in the top right-hand side (under the Save button) to schedule it. Simply choose a specific date and time, and your post will be published at your request. This allows you to schedule a week’s worth (or even longer) of blog posts in advance so that you’re not always taking time out of your day to manually do it yourself.
You can also backdate a blog post too. If you forgot to post your blog yesterday, for example, you can always add a back date, and it will appear on your blog as if you posted it yesterday.

4. Make a “Continue Reading” link.

Sometimes your blog post is too long that you don’t want to have it all on the home page of your site. Instead, you want to offer a little tidbit of information and allow the user to keep reading by linking them to another page on your blog that has the full version of the post.
Any time you want to break up a post and insert a “Continue Reading” link, use the “more” tag icon found in the navigation. Put your cursor where you want to end the post, and insert the “more” tag to enable the “Continue Reading” feature.

5. Use header typeface.

If you consistently use the same typeface for headers and your body copy, your readers are going to be confused. It is always best to draw attraction to your headers by making them stand out. You can always simply bold your headers by using the bold feature in the navigation, or you can create a header typeface and use this every time you have a header. Your header typeface can be larger, bolder and more vivid than the rest of your copy.
If you have a WordPress account, make sure to employ these five tips to ensure that your blog stands out from all the rest.

Elain Valentine is a student at the University of North Texas and an avid blogger. She never blogs without a grammar checker and she uses the software often to proof her work and rid it of any errors. Grammar rules can be tough to remember so she has no qualms about letting a checker do the work for her.

Unbeknownst to most, the feature journalist for “The Guardian” etched his name in history with a few keystrokes and his name in the byline. Today, he is regarded as the world’s first recorded blogger. While much of what he produced some 12 years ago was just an experiment, today, the phenomenon of blogging continues to emerge as a culture icon for individuals looking to share opinions, ideas and information.

What was once reserved for professional, Web-savvy experts with working knowledge of HTML and FTP now has morphed into a streamlined version for everyday folks. Today, millions of individuals operate and manage blogs, ranging from daily journals to information about sports media. With so many topics and so much to learn about blogging, it can overwhelm even the most tech-savvy individual.

Know Your Readers and Write About What You Love

The reason most blogs fail to yield high traffic results is because of the lack of reader focus. A student studying business should always remember one important aspect: Understand your customer. If salesman forgets this concept, he loses his sale.

Blogging functions in a similar fashion. Knowing the reader builds traffic. If you know your readers like, short, quick information about entertainment news, why would you create lengthy articles? Get to know your audience. Ask yourself what they enjoy to read. Find out the style of writing they prefer. Ask questions. Find solutions, and most importantly, know who it is you’re writing to.

Other bloggers feel they should write about topics no one else has covered before. In theory, sounds like an excellent idea, but say what your writing about doesn’t interest you very much. Your writing will suffer because of it. Stick to what you know and love so that you’ll produce your best work as a blogger.

Develop a Following

The lifeline of a blog is its followers. Without them, a blog remains tucked away in some dark corner of the Internet. Followers help establish credibility. Followers help earn money. Followers display that people want to hear what you have to say. Building a decent following derives from a number of different avenues. Here’s some of the best:

Strengthen Your HTML Titles – It’s easy and simple to rework your HTML title tags to meet recent search criteria. Search engines use keywords to direct users to sought-after information. If your HTML titles happen to be one of the keywords, you just created a traffic spike.

Create Link Clusters to Your Content – Link building helps boost your search ranking placement. The more links you have, the higher the likelihood a search engine will rank you closer to the top. Go through your content and embed links that direct users to previous posts to help boost your traffic.

Stay in Touch with Readers – They are your lifeline of your blog, remember. Make them feel important by responding to their thoughts and opinions. It’s quick. It’s easy and it shows you care about their comments as well.

Take Pride in What You’ve Achieved

Blogging takes time to master. It requires dedication. It requires determination to improve; more importantly, it demands a decent writer. Look at some of the best blogs in each respective field – technology, politics, advice and even video game blogs – and you’ll notice they all share one common characteristic: They look and read professionally.

The best bloggers take pride in developing content. Webmasters spend hours devising a solid layout, and even asking for help when necessary. Blogging is more than just rushing to type out your thoughts and hitting the “Publish” button. It’s about captivating your reader so they continue to return to your blog.

Now, that isn’t to say you must be a grammar wiz to be a great blogger – not by any means. You do however need to eliminate common mistakes found in your writing, such as run-on sentences, subject-verb agreements, homonym misspellings, correct tenses, and proper punctuation.

Take pride in your writing. Show audiences that your competent enough to compose relevant, alluring information that will keep them coming back for more. How serious would you take a news blog with several grammar mistakes? Or a sports website that cannot spell the name of a professional athlete correctly? Slow down. Edit your work and aim on improving your abilities.

Blog Promotions

Established blogs tend to have a few thousand visitors each day. With a solid following, webmasters have a proven record of captivating audiences with their words. You might operate a niche blog or may even discuss political events in a satirical manner. No matter what you cover, you’ve demonstrated a sagacious writing style. With your devote followers, you can open your blog to advertisers to make some money.

Promoting your blog can make for a great source of income, but maneuvering through the various channels can present a series of challenges. From knowing how to promote your blog to recognizing who to target presents a series of overwhelming obstacles. Here’s the basics:

Outsource Your Content – Consider using an article writing services company to help with promotion. Blogs gain popularity by the number of visitors that visit a site because of the captivating content found on it. Without content, visitors will go elsewhere for news, information and opinions. Producing content takes time, skill and patience. Content mills serve as a great way for donating a part of your website to help promote a business.

Leave Some Space for Click Ads – Online blogging platforms make it possible for the webmaster to set aside space for advertisers. Visit any popular websites and you’ll see side and top banners riddling each page with advertising. Each click earns the host a few. Now imagine if 10,000 of your 100,000 followers click on an ad on your website at 5 cents a click. You just made an easy $500 for almost zero work.

Compose a Review on a Product – Businesses release thousands of new products a year, and many need reviewers to offer candor opinion on a product. It’s quick, easy and great way to make a few extra dollars by posting information.

Guest blogging can be an excellent way to earn credibility in your blog’s niche, establishing yourself as a writer to be taken seriously and reaping the rewards brought to you by an instant traffic boost. In order to give yourself the best possible chance of having your article accepted as a guest blogger and taking full advantage of the benefits, use this handy infographic and accompanying quick guide to submit only the highest quality content as a guest blog post.

1. Write interesting, enjoyable and unique content

The key, of course, to a successful guest blog post is good, readable content that readers will enjoy and want more of. Strive to be interesting, presenting new ideas in an honest, personal and unique way, all in the interest of giving your readers a reason to recall your blog by name the next time they’re looking for an interesting website to visit.

2. Don’t go overboard

While the goal of your guest blog article submission is ultimately to drive traffic back to your site, don’t stuff your content with unnecessary or tricky links. The readers you want to follow you back to your home on the web are the ones who are genuinely interested in the content you produce, not those duped into visiting by awkwardly placed or misleading hyperlinks.

3. Make your article stand out from the crowd

There are millions of blog posts being added to the ever-growing blogosphere on a daily basis, making standing out nothing resembling an easy task. In the interest of making your article one that visitors will want to stop and read, utilize graphics, HTML, humor, insider knowledge and well-constructed opinion to give your readers an experience that they can only obtain with you.

What is a social media crisis
Let’s start at the beginning. A social media crisis is when uncontrollable and negative activity is taking place about your company, online.

Now I’m not talking about a little rumor or some negative criticism posted to your Facebook wall or blog stream. (Although there is a proper way to respond to these types of situations to refrain them from developing into something bigger). I’m talking about a full-on social media crisis.

For example, if you wake up one morning to find dozens or more negative comments flooding in about you online, all mentioning the same situation or topic – then this is a major red flag and time to put your social media crisis plan into action.

Who does a social media crisis affect?
There’s a misconception floating around stating that a social media crisis only attacks big corporations and/or brands actively on social media. Unfortunately, these theories are false. Social media crises don’t discriminate. They can attack any brand – from the small brand-of-one to the mega corporation – at any time.

So how can you protect your brand from a social media crisis?
The wisest solution here is to be prepared your company with a social media crisis plan. It’s a known fact that for every 1$ you spend developing a crisis plan, $7 is saved in brand damage and repercussions when you eventually find yourself faced with a crisis.

Learn to protect yourself from a social media crisis

The following strategic steps will help you prevent and overcome a social media crisis.

Preventative measures:

1- Monitor the discussions around your brand
No matter the size of your organization, things are being said about you and your business online. The first step to overcoming a social media crisis is to regularly monitor and respond to these online conversations accordingly.

Note: There are a tons of free tools out there that will help you do this. You just have to set them up to alert you when someone mentions your brand (or whatever keywords you’re monitoring for) online. For a list of some awesome free tools to check out, click here.

2- Build a loyal following
This is a very important preemptive strategy. A loyal following will come to your aid in a social media crisis and help you regain control of the situation. Trust me, when you find yourself faced with a social media attack, you’ll be wishing for all the help you can get!

3- Brainstorm different possible crises
Prevent the preventable. This is a great exercise to do a couple times a year. Get creative and explore the different scenarios of possible crises and then find a way to prevent those that can be prevented, while preparing for those that cannot.

Steps to take once you’re in a social media crisis:

1- Respond to the crisis immediately
This is extremely important. The second you realize that you’re under social media attack, you must RESPOND! Your first response should simply advise your audience that you’re aware of the situation, that you’re looking into it, and that they can rely on you for more information as soon as you know more. This simple tactic will immediately help you begin to regain control of the situation.

2- Release an official statement
So the public is aware that you’ve been alerted to the crisis and that you’re in the process of looking into it. Once you’re ready, it’s time to hold true on your promise and release your official statement. This statement should be released on the same channel that the attack originally broke out on.

Within this official statement you should remember to:

Be open, honest and transparent

Do not make excuses – confront the situation head on

Answer all common questions

State how you are correcting the situation

Assure your audience that you’re taking the proper measures to make sure that the situation will never happen again

Show that you are sincere, understanding and compassionate

3- Sincerely apologize
The truth is that if you share a strong relationship with your customers and fans, no matter how upset they are, they’re going to want to forgive you. Forgiveness is in our nature and a part of our society, but in order for them to forgive you, you’ll need to sincerely apologize – and mean it.

Along with your sincere apology, it’s very important to show that you’ve learned your lesson and that you’re taking the measures to make sure that no such event will ever happen again. This will allow you to continue to strengthen the relationship you share with your customers and fans, instead of watching it be destroyed by the crisis.

Bonus tip:

Never delete a negative comment
There’s one piece of advice that I can’t close this article without sharing with you. It’s very important and is the number 1 biggest mistake that brands tend to make when faced with a social media crisis: they get scared and delete the negative comments posted to their channels.

It’s a normal reaction to want to hide the negative, but what these brands don’t realize is that by doing this, they’re only further upsetting their audience. You need to remember that it should always be about strengthening the relationship, so instead of deleting the comments, respond publicly to them and focus on strengthening the relationships rather than destroying them even further.

In conclusion
A social media crisis, unprejudice and unpredictable, can strike at any time – no matter your brand’s size, industry or social media presence. However, with the right social media crisis plan, you can learn the proper ways to respond to such a crisis and turn the negative situation into a positive brand experience, bringing you even closer to your customers and fans.

Now this is something worth investing in!

Have you prepared your company for a social media crisis, and if not, do you intend to? Share your thoughts and experiences with me below!

Web designing is not only important for a website but it is equally vital for a blog as well. If you compare a website to a blog; a blog is just like a website’s mini version. Therefore, web designing is also necessary if you are starting off with a blog. There is nothing really different in website designing for a blog and a website. However, since a blog is a smaller platform, things get a little bit easier compared to a website from all angles. Below are a few guidelines to help you with your blog’s web designing.

Why Choose WordPress?

First off all remember to make your blog over WordPress which is the best blogging platform currently and I think it always will be. The main reason behind this is that WordPress blogs are much easier to navigate and highly user friendly. Not only this but WordPress offers a lot of themes to choose from and apply them to your blog. The fun does not end here; with a WordPress blog you can also avail several plugins and give your blog a lot more functionality customizing it according to your needs and requirements.

Themes

In a blog’s web design, one thing that matters the most is the theme that you will apply to it. Remember, the theme of your blog will reflect what your blog is all about so choose accordingly. Over here I will suggest that you invest in buying a premium theme for your blog so it would look much more professional and no useless ads from the maker of the theme would appear anywhere. Once you have an attractive and professional theme applied to your blog, you can then start customizing it by adding plugins to it. Remember to keep things simple and your blog should be easy to navigate.

Choose Your Fonts and Graphics Well

The main reason or idea behind blog is to share content; your post or writings with others. This makes it very important to choose the right background, text, and color combination between the both. Go with big enough font size, easy enough font style, and totally readable font color. If your blog is easy to read, people would love it. Not to forget, add quality content for people. Also, add a site map just like a website to the blog and make sure it has around eight to ten pages so people can roam around it and enjoy a lot more stuff.

While there are plenty of Web 2.0 web indexing services around that are increasing in popularity – the fact is that search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN are still the biggest source of traffic to websites on the web.

As a result – learning how to be indexed and ranked well by them seems like a no brainer.

URL Optimize:

Search engines and visitors can interact with your website more affectively when you use URLs that describe the pages content (for example: http://www.company.com/companyinformation).

URLs are extremely vital to your SEO campaign. Be sure to use URLs that make it easy for Google™ to index your site.

Title Optimize:

Keep your titles concise and make sure they contain your best keywords.

Each page should have its own exclusive title.

Featured tool: Here’s a snippet-optimizer that allows you to see how your titles look on Google™ and other search results.

Meta Description Optmize:

Meta descriptions are useful because they often dictate how your pages are shown in search results.

For optimum effectiveness, meta descriptions should be 70-160 characters long.

Your meta descriptions should be concise and contain your best keywords.

Make sure each page of your website has its own meta description.

Meta Keywords Optimize:

Meta keywords are words or phrases that pertain to your site’s content. In the past, people have tried to take advantage of this tag so now it doesn’t affect your search rankings the way that it used to.

Heading Tags Optimize:

You can include keywords in your headings.

The initial heading (<H1>) should include your best keywords.

Using only one <H1> heading per page will strengthen your SEO.

Images Optimize:

Adding ALT text to your images so that it’s easier for search engines to index them.

Search engines don’t physically see images the way people do. ALT text is an option that allows you to specifically describe the image.

ALT text attaches a description to your pictures so that they show up in Google™ and other search engine’s image results.

Make sure your website images have their own specific ALT text.

To find out how to assign ALT text to your images, click here.

Keep in mind that your pages load time will vary based on the number and size of your images. Try your best to keep it low.

Text/HTML Ratio:

You can strengthen your SEO by increasing the recurrence of keywords on your page and adding more text that pertains to your website’s content.

Robots.txt File:

This file restricts the activity of search engine crawlers and stops them from accessing certain pages and directories.

A robots.txt file also locates the XML sitemap.

To check your robots.txt file for syntax errors, Click Here.

XML Sitemaps:

A XML sitemap lists URLs that can be crawled and may offer other information such as how often you update, when your last update occurred and importance.

With an XML sitemap, search engines can index your website more accurately.

Although it’s been debated, we suggest that you submit an XML sitemap to Google™ Webmasters Tools.

Language:

You should declare the contents language in the HTML code of each page.

You should also declare the language code in the URL (for example: company.com/es/contact.html).

If you plan on building a multilingual site, refer to the tips found Here.

Doctype:

Specifying a doctype assists your web browser in correctly rendering your content.

Encoding:

Declaring a character/language encoding will significantly strengthen your SEO. It also prevents complication when rendering special characters.

Google™ Analytics:

Google™ Analytics is monitoring your website. This is a great tool and should be taking advantage of.

The presentation of Google’s search results is always improving due to Microformats.

Dublin Core:

Dublin Core is a set of metadata standards that describe your websites content.

Geo Meta Tags:

The search engine Bing utilizes Geo-Meta Tags even though Google™ doesn’t.

RSS Feeds:

Blogs and news websites depend on feeds.
